When the end of the world comes
I hope its end comes quickly
A peaceful crossing in the night
In the half winking of an eye
Before pain can assert itself
Swiftly, that the trees may know no laborious
Exhalation of oxygen
No death rattle in their leaves
No long artificial winter
Simply here one moment and gone the next
In the years long past all we know
When we have become the ancients
Free of blame’s burden
Like the dinosaurs
Not that anyone will remain to notice
But let us have a few moments
Of peace before then
Time to learn more
To live better
To care for the verdant world around us
Obeying that greatest and most simple of
Commands, yet the hardest to live
—to love one another
