She got down in her hind end,
Legs weakening and gnarled, like worn tree roots
Knowing what the vet would say
I gave her a few days in hope
Cooking her hamburger meat
She ate from my hand
My daughters cried as I took her to the vet’s office
A single shot of barbital
And the end came fast,
Faster than expected
Resting her head in the hands that fed her
