It had been a warm spring so far
March had brought forth
The buds of flowers and trees
The dogwoods eerily bearing their crosses
Yards were alive with azalea bloom
Mockingbirds dancing on the lawn
Even the pecan, the wisest of trees
Was fooled into thinking
Its rest was over
Time to go to work
I thought I saw a star wink at me
That clear night before
Before the ice crystals formed in the
Chlorophyll-laden cells
Ripping and bursting open
In those hours just before dawn
When we stood shivering in the cemetery
At sunrise
And the world fell silent
For the wonder of the empty grave
And the out of place browning
Of frozen spring foliage
